I didn't understand rope. I didn't understand why anybody would choose it over chain and restraints.
This isn't too unusual for me. A lot of these things I need to experience for myself to understand.
I found VisibleRestraint on recon, and after a bit of negotiation set up a play date. I explained my reasons and what I was hoping to get out of the experience. Since I was expecting to endure rather than enjoy I am a little surprised but delighted that he took the risk of playing with a tourist.
My big request was that he perform a hogtie on me. It's the photos that I see on recon, so seemed a good place to start.
VisibleRestraint is fast with rope. His play will often involve several ties.
His first tie was a hogtie done over my cloithing. While I am not body shy, this did make me feel more comfortable.
For the second tie I was stripped down to a pair of while briefs. The tie involved a standing partial suspension on one leg. It was challenging and I started sweating profusely. After I was let down I felt such a feeling of relief. There's no pleasure like the cessation of pain. The photo of me lying on my back at this moment makes me remember just how good I felt.
Then I was tied using red climbing webbing. I felt this was the greatest thing ever. It was comfortable, it was secure. I fell in love with the medium.
I was then put in chains. It felt good. I tried using what little flexibility I have to pull the chains forward to where I could attack the clasps.

I wasn't immediately converted to rope. I was immediately converted to climbing webbing. I can see that this was the start of many good things.
