Early rope instruction tends to include multiple lessons on how to store rope.
Like people's preference in underwear, different styles work for different people and in different circumstances. In particular I tend to wear Champion boxer briefs on a daily basis. I tend to wear YM boxer briefs on more special occasions. I wear jock straps for more formal leather occasions. I tend not to wear jock straps while running on the treadmill, prefering more material to collect sweat and prevent the sweat from running down my legs.
But back to rope.
Debates about styles of rope storage are like religious and philisophical debates. There isn't necessarily a right answer.
There are a few styles that I find useful.
The one that I use for storage on the back wall of the dungeon is a daisy chain of doubled rope. I pull the end through to lock it off. A while back I standardized on a tightness that gives a 10:1 chained:unchained ratio. A 40ft rope will hang 4ft tall when chained. For me, this makes it easy to find the rope that I want among other ropes.
For use I pull through the final loop. And then I pull on the series of slip knots. I run the rope through my hands to unkink the rope.
This technique works especially well for climbing webbing. This doesn't work quite as well for stiffer climbing rope.
I have seen others use a style of quadrupled daisy chain. This has the advantage of not puting pressure on the very center of the rope during storage. But it is harder to have a consistent ratio, so I haven't been able to adopt it.
When I am in a situation when I am going to be reusing ropes quickly I will coil the rope doubled. I hold both ends in my left hand. With my right hand I will wrap the doubled ropes between my left hand and left elbow. I make sure not to tangle the ropes. When I have about 24 inches left drop the coils off of my elbow into my left hand. I then switch to a perpendicular wrap around the existing coils. I tuck the last four inches through the end near my left hand and pull tight.
This is sometimes called the grenade tie. After pulling through the bight through the bundle can be thrown across the room (keeping hold of the bight). The rope will be unkinked and untangled. As a matter of habit I run the rope through my hands to make sure that the rope is still intact.
For ropes 10ft and shorter, and for ropes 4mil and thinner, I do the same bundle, except around just my wrist instead of to my elbow.
But even when playing publicly I will collect the uncoiled rope in a pile. This entire pile will be transfered into a backpack. Once home, the layers will slowly be pulled one at a time out of the bag and chained. I call this "grab and go."
We eventually find the styles of underwear and rope that work best for us.
