sling hardware

The rigging community in Seattle uses a lot of climbing hardware.  It might be because the flagship store for REI is here.  It might be because of a social form of founder's effect

The boating world has solved related problems. My first visit to West Marine boating store was an entirely new experience.

They have rope.  Beautiful rope.  There have been advances in rope technology including amsteel in several colors.

Even more exciting for me were the varieties of load-rated hardware.  They have load-rated varieties of the panic snaps that are sometimes used in bondage.  They have swivels.

They have chain.  They have an entirely different selection of chain than home depot.  And they have the hardware to cut it.  The beautiful thick anchor chain would probably be difficult to cut with the bolt cutters in my safety corner.  But they sold bigger bolt cutters than I had ever seen before, all the way up to 42".

The greatest thing at the store however were the shockles line snubber.  They are rated to 2,500lbs.  They stretch a predictable amount under load.  They are the perfect hardware for hanging a sling, and are obviously safer than the homeDepot hobby-horse springs that I had been using.  soundsFun has used them to suspend the bondage table.  At the Delta2011 run I saw a similar product used for a bouncy gear suspension.

(While these are rated to 2,500lbs, the pet leashes sold on amazon by the same manufacturer are not load rated.)

I am more excited by these than I have been about any other dungeon hardware in a long time.
